A woman accused of trying to kill her son-in-law appeared in Broward County Court on Wednesday morning.

Cheryl Hepner faces an attempted first-degree murder charge after police say she shot Salvatore Miglino. She has entered a plea of not guilty.

"She is doing the best she can and is dealing with the situation until we can sort it out," said Hepner's lawyer, Michael Tenzer.

Police said the 66-year-old woman shot her estranged son-in-law twice. The bullets pierced his shoulder and hit his rib cage.

Miglino captured the cellphone video of the incident.

Deputies said it all started when Miglino went to pick his 3-year-old son at his mother-in-law's house in Tamarac on Dec. 7. Hepner stepped outside with the boy's pillow and bag.

A few seconds later, police said she pulled out a gun that was hiding behind a pillow and fired three shots.

Miglino is going through a divorce and custody fight with Hepner's daughter.

Court  records show she filed a domestic violence claim against Miglino.

As for Hepner, she told deputies Miglino tried to shoot her. She was arrested as soon police saw the recorded images.
